| Waterfront Airport Expansion Meeting
On Tues. Nov. 22 at 7PM you have a date with destiny. Once again, the
health of our city's waterfront is at stake.
The federal government's Port Authority is trying to rush through yet
another waterfront airport expansion plan which would increase air
passenger traffic by 3,000% or more, turning the Island Airport into a
polluting mini-Pearson.
The cancellation of the bridge was not the end of the Port Authority's
expansion dreams. They are about to spend $15-million more on a new
ferry and airport buildings. This is just the beginning of a larger
expansion scheme, detailed in the Port Authority's business plan for the
airport.
The federal Environmental Assessment Act requires the Port Authority to
hold one public meeting to hear the public's concerns before the Port
Authority okays its own Environmental Assessment and starts expanding
the airport in a park.
Mayor Miller's slogan "Stop the Island Airport Expansion" won him the
2003 municipal election. He will pressure the federal government to stop this
latest expansion. We must all help by attending the Nov. 22 public
meeting and by bringing friends and neighbours to tell the federal
government what we think of its Port Authority's scandalous behaviour.
Federal MPs, city councillors and the press will be invited.
Will we let the federal government's legacy on Toronto's long-promised
clean, green waterfront be a polluting mini-Pearson? Or will it be a
spectacular park rising from the 215-acres of public land now occupied
by the failing Island Airport?
Meeting date & time: Tuesday, Nov. 22, 7pm
Place: Radisson Admiral Hotel, Salon A
Address: 249 Queen's Quay West (between Bay & Spadina)
